Our Protest

Our Protest

Human Value

- Placards: A written piece of information, usually a sign, poster or banner. The importance is that it deepens our understanding of a topic rather than just comment on it.

Idealism - white blonde hair (pricey)
Average, Weight

Company mottos

"Human yet inhumane"

"We have an app"

My Role

My role in the protest was to man the Stall itself and take orders, answer questions from passers by, explain the company e.t.c. My character was really calm and friendly to contradict the callous reality of what I was actually doing, I reflected in my speech (i spoke softly but with intention) , physicality (I stood with a relaxed but upright posture) and costume (I wore chinos and a smart/casual shirt).

How My Research Affected The Protest?

In preparation for the piece it was my job to produce the papers stating all of the information on the babies, price, race, minorities, disabilities (mental/physical), sex and gender.

Based on an article I read on the commonality of low self-esteem amongst young black females I decided to label the corresponding babies as reasonably cheap. A lot of black girls in this generations alter themselves to mimic typically white features such as straightened hair, a thinner nose but personally most upsetting of all, lighter skin.

I had a mixed race baby on sale (half white and half black) this baby had a reasonably similar price to the black babies as from personal experience mixed race people are often referred to as "black". Through the fetishisation of mixed race people dating as far back as the colonial era up to the recent surge in popularity in recent years I marked the mixed race babies as "out of stock"

The female babies were cheaper due to females of the world having lesser opportunities and the general hardships that a woman or girl has to endure in every day life. It is likely that women will experience sexual abuse, discrimination at work (in terms of both pay and jobs assigned) and just general discrimination.

Strengths and Weaknesses of Our Protest

I am happy with how the protest turned out both Aesthetically and intellectually. I brought in a plain black bed-sheet to cover the table and lay a children's patch blanket  over the top of it. The imagery of a teddy bear blanket over a black sheet was powerful in its contrast.

Images such as the dead Syrian child were hung up above us on sale which was also powerful some of the younger students failed to grip the political message so if we were to do it again, I think that we should

Discuss The Potential of protest As a Theatre Product.

I personally don't agree with the idea of a protests being assessed and graded as it subtracts for the organic nature of a real protest. The people are there to do something that they strongly believe not simply because they were told to. Potentially, the combined nature of theatrical arts and protests could be interesting but it would have to be by like-minded and passionate people to truly be successful.

  1. Would you do such a protest without it being marked and in this format? I would love it if you did go and find like minded and passionate people to do such a creative protest without it being marked. Please send me pictures and tell me about it if you do and I promise not to mark it.
